at what is happening in michigan, thousands of union supporters turned out on the steps of the capitol to protest right to work measures. the measure passed. taking a look at the front page of "the detroit free press," "the law that is not over." "unions will not go down without a fight. recall efforts and legal challenges are possible." there you can see a union representative struggling with michigan state police yesterday over right to work legislation. here is the story -- host: "the washington post" has a map of right to work law states. and love the outdoors, which is why i especially want to highlight our work to protect lake michigan. beginning with the first bill i introduced in the house, the great lakes water protection act, along with my good friends, i'm proud of our efforts to keep lake michigan clean. this legislation would prohibit waste water pollution from running into the great lakes, but our work to protect the 10th district's most cherished natural resource did not stop there. we focused on in supporting great lakes initiative through authoring and supporting funding amendments and advocating its importance, all to make sure this important program to protect the great lakes is adequately funded. i'm proud we have been able to facilitate the cleanup of waukegan harbor. it has finally started under our watch. so much work in getting this accomplished has happened and i want to thank suesey and jerry and cam for their dedicated service for cleaning up the harbor. getting finally lake county's pathway to the great lakes. i also want to highlight another cause which i have been proud to champion and that i

states. host: let's get a republican voice. our next caller is calling from west bloomfield, michigan, on the republican line. good morning. caller: i would like to get your thoughts on a balanced approach and have unbiased taxation by using a flat tax. that way you can calculate the amount of taxes we need for the deficit over 10 years. another point is to control the spending on entitlements by not giving millionaires social security benefits, thereby satisfying president obama's approach. instead of doing it through taxation, he can do it through the entitlements. guest: those are both ideas that have been raised, especially the social security and medicare benefits for the wealthy and potentially might not need them to live off of. one tricky part of that is wealthier americans have been paying these taxes for decades into social security and medicare if and a lot of folks have a problem with the idea of taking away their benefits they have paid for if just because they happen to be more well off. and issued the first caller raised and something to watch is this could really sort

's a different story in the great lakes. it's a winter wonderland anywhere in the state of michigan. it snowed hard last night, northern indiana and much of the state of ohio right now is seeing snow. careful driving, interstate 70 going across the lower portions of the great lakes and the ohio valley. and the winds are gusting, too. we probably have a little bit of blowing and drifting snow in indiana, michigan and ohio. and again, those winds this morning around new york city could get as high as 60 miles per hour. the worst of it coming in the next three hours. so keep that in mind as you're driving on the roads or doing anything outdoors. as far as snowfall goes, over the next 24 to 48 hours, we're going to get lake-effect bands. we're also going to see snow on the backside of this big storm. western new york will get a good coating of snow between three to six inches in most locations. so the forecast over the next three days, today's the worst travel day by far, great lakes and the northeast. thankfully as we go through the weekend, it's a little chilly across the country, but the weathe

support. today, we're not doing either one. in michigan, i signed a bill to raise the minimum wage to $7.40 an hour. that was six years ago. it needs to be raised again. the federal minimum wage is lower than that. it is now just $7.25 an hour. try, just try imagine earning $7.25 an hour and paying a mortgage or rent try living on $7.25 an hour and buying food, much less acquiring transportation in some way. forget clothing. that's a total luxury. this is a moral issue. but it is also an economic issue that's going to determine the vitality of our nation's recovery from recession. joining me now are two champions of the living wage fight. jonathan westin, director of fast food forward an organization that helped organize the strikes in new york. and linda archer is a current mcdonald's employee who's joined in the fight for better wages. they're joining us from new york. great to have you both inside "the war room" to share your story. really appreciate it. >> thank you. >> thanks for having us. >> jennifer

congressman tim huelskamp is with us and from michigan we have congressman justin amash is here. all right. congressman huelskamp, let me start with you. because you were quoted saying, in fact, you believe this was directly related to votes you had given. you brought this up in conference yesterday. what were you told in conference? >> well, we were ignored. i asked for a list of the votes by which they used to make this decision and indeed it a list, a litmus test. and it wasn't provided yet. i think many of my colleagues are outraged because the vote is say democrat. i mean, we don't turn that over to anybody in washington and clearly i noted against the debt deal. i voted against a none of these budgets, i voted against these bills that didn't solve our spending problem. and that's where i've been most critical, where we are headed in washington. but that's why i ran. my folks sent me up to change washington before it changes me and now we get punished by getting taken off committees important to kansas. >> you are saying this is a result of your conservatism and this is only happening

on acceleration. >> it's little bit of both. one of those survey, university of michigan, people are more confident about employment prospects than at any point since 1984. these judge people's change in feeling mono. you can't compare your feelings five years ago to today. it may be we look like we're feeling better but if you got someone in the room from 2008 they may feel worse. people are feeling more at ease. on the plus side the employment situation isn't getting better but it stopped getting worse. incomes are up a little bit. people have been saving for four years. they don't have nearly as much debt and rates are low. there's a lot of factors coming into this. the housing market is picking up. nothing like it was. but better than it has been in recent memory. there's a lot of reasons why people in general are feeling better which doesn't mean there aren't 20, 30, 40 million people who are doing poorly. >> here's the $6 million question. here we have a situation where most americans are more optimistic, businesses are more pessimistic inverse to the last couple of years when busin
